Starting the conversation about moving
3 minute read · Last reviewed September 2026
Most parents don't resist a move. They resist losing control. The first talk goes better when it's about what they want to keep.
Before you talk
- Pick a calm time, not right after a fall or a bad day
- Decide what you need to learn, not what you need them to agree to
- Bring siblings in early so your parent doesn't hear mixed messages
- Keep your parent in every decision. People follow plans they helped make
Questions that help
- What do you love most about this house?
- What's getting harder lately?
- If things changed, where would you want to be?
- Who do you trust to help with decisions?
What to avoid
Skip ultimatums and skip deadlines in the first talk. Say what you've noticed with care, ask what they think, and plan a second conversation. Small agreements, like a home safety visit, often come first.
