Hurricane season and your parent

Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. A short plan made in advance makes a big difference for an older adult.
Do these before a storm is forecast
- Register your parent with STEAR by dialing 2-1-1
- Decide where they'll stay and who will take them
- Pack a go-bag: seven days of medication, a written medication list, ID, insurance cards and copies of any power of attorney

After a storm
- Keep your parent out of a flooded house
- Photograph every room before cleanup
- File insurance and FEMA claims
- Avoid door-to-door contractors and get written bids
