Helping a parent from out of town

4 minute read · Last reviewed September 2026

You can run a move from a distance. It takes a local point person, a shared plan, and a few well-timed trips.

Build a local team

  • Name one local point person: a neighbor, a faith community member or a paid move manager
  • Ask 2-1-1 and the Area Agency on Aging about daily check-in programs
  • Share one plan with everyone so no one is working from a different list

Plan your trips

Most families need two or three visits: one to plan and tour, one for move week, and one for the house. Book move week early, and keep a day at each end for your parent.

Between trips, use video calls to walk each room and decide what goes.

Get the paperwork right first

A power of attorney and a HIPAA release are what let you talk to doctors and banks from far away. Without them, everything slows down.
